What is a good dog hair clipper under $100 and is good for long haired breeds?

I have a border collie/golden retriever mix and we live too far away to take him to a groomer, so we need a good clipper to get the job done. If there are no good clippers under 100 dollars, please name some anyways! Also, do dog hair clippers work on matted hair?

I think you'll have a hard time finding a *good* set for under $100. A lot of the 'sets' that are sold at Wal Mart and such are just not meant for a heavy-coated dog. Even the better brands just aren't meant for the heavy, thick coats of double and/or triple coated dogs.

I personally use Oster or Andis with the snap-removable blades. This way when one gets warm, I can switch out to another blade of the same length. And with the range of sizes of blades, I don't have to fight with using guards. This isn't a higher-end set up, but it's not cheap. Blades average around $20-$25 (more for surgical or specialty blades) and the clipper itself was running around $150 when I got it (like 10 years ago...but it still works!!). I lucked out and got mine for half price from a place that was going out of business and had everything 50% off.

Shaving a dog?

I need to shave the hair off of my parent’s dog. Her hair has become severely matted and no one ever brushes her. The vet suggested that we shave her to take care of it. She is a mixed breed; chow/shepherd mix. I used a pair of human clippers on her and it took almost an hour to clip a 6 sq inch section. Her undercoat is very thick and she is getting mats. I am experienced in clipping dogs, but I’ve never seen fur that is so thick it causes clippers to over heat! What are some good HEAVY DUTY clippers to use that will cost less than the $100 I've been quoted for grooming?
For everyone that suggets I have been cruel to this dog, please understand that I AM TAKING this dog away from someone who did not care for it properly. This was not my dog but I am making it my responsibility.

Good for you for trying to take care of the dog! The best thing to do is to take her to a groomer. For a good set of clippers that will do the job you're looking at around $130 plus $20 each for good blades and you would need several for a big job like that. The reason you would need several blades is so that when one blade gets warm you can take it off and put on a cool blade. A hot blade will cause clipper burn which is painful and irritating to the dogs skin. Spray on lubes don't work that well to cool the blades. Please do NOT try to scissor out the mats. If they are too close to the skin you can accidentally cut the dog. Also shop around for groomers. Beware of a groomer that will not allow you to stay.

New home; will I need to re-train housebreaking to my Lab?

I have a 10 month old Lab. She's housebroken and crate trained very well. She has her "area" of the yard, a corner of the yard where she goes potty. We'll be moving to a new home, and completely new surroundings. I'd like her potty habit to stay the same (confined to her area of choice - outside!) My concern is that she'll need to be re-trained in her housebreaking. I've heard many stories about dogs who were fully housebroken, and moving into a new home made them regress, or stressed/anxious. What are some preventative measures I can take, to make sure she is comfortable, and feels safe in our new home. And also, prevention in housebraking "regression". Will I need to leash her up every time for the first few months? Oh, and I'm a stay-at-home-mom, so I'll be there if she needs anything, anytime! Does anyone have any advice? I appreicate it.

It's certainly possible. It depends on how she thinks she's been housebroken. If she understands that she mustn't eliminate indoors in any building, you probably won't have a problem. If she thought that it was only HER house she couldn't go in, then you might have some re-training to do.

When you introduce her to the new house, the first place you should bring her is to her new "area."
If you've been using a certain phrase to encourage her to relieve herself (like "go potty," "go pee," whatever it is you might say), say that often as you introduce her to her new "bathroom."

Chances are she'll catch on quickly. For the first few days, treat her like she's a brand new eight-week-old puppy. Watch her like a hawk and every time you suspect she has to go, clip a leash on her and take her to her new "area." Encourage her to go, and if she does, throw a party with plenty of treats, praise and hugs.

Good luck, I'm sure she'll do fine.

Is my kitten a part of Birman or Ragdoll or Siamese?

I rescued her from a shelter few months ago as a kitten and she's now 5 lbs at 4 months old. Only if there is DNA breed testing for cats sold at petco like they have for dogs I would know for sure. She has rabbit-like coat with torbie (lynx+tortie) points and body fur is spotted with ivory and white. Eye color is grayish blue. Her adoption paper simply said "siamese mix" and I don't believe it.

stonyfield low fat yogurt - 130 cal
whole grain granola bar - 120 cal

exercise sounds fine but eat more! you need proper food and more protein
