How to train dogs to stay off furniture while I am at work?
We just started leaving our two (2 yr old mini schnauzers) dogs out of the crate while we are at work. They have free rome of the house. They are doing great no potty accidents at all. The only thing that they do wrong is get on the good living room furniture and take the decorative pillows down on the floor. They chewed one of the tassles off a pillow yesterday. When we leave we take them into the room and point to the pillows and tell then NO NO NO!!! But that still does not work. Please help! if you have any idea what we could do. We really don’t want them to be locked up all day in there cage.
If you are opposed to installing a gate to confine them to a room without upholstered furniture, the next solution would be to make the furniture uncomfortable for the dogs. Someone suggested buying scat mats; I have heard those are effective. I’d compare prices online, though.
You could also try placing a clean carpet runner or car mats (the kind with pointed little rubber bumps on the bottom) upside-down on the furniture. You could even make your own deterrent by pushing rows of thumbtacks through a piece of thick cardboard, and place that point-side up on the furniture.
You could, of course, place large objects on the sofa to block the dogs’ access but that won’t train them to stay off.
