If the rabbit can really jump, you will need a very big pen for it. Please make sure that the rabbit has some ranging time. It's good for their legs and their well being.

Large pens are about $80. A box of hay (good for them) is about $10/box.

You can spoil them every now and then with one or two blueberries a day, or a verrrry tiny speck of banana.

The tough part is rabbit proofing your home. Some rabbits like to chew on wires!!!! Watch out!!!

You will need to spend some time litter box training the bunny, but they're creatures of habit and will learn.

You don't have to have a rabbit with a partner in crime, but if they come in pairs, don't separate them.

Our rabbit had three partners that he all outlived. He didn't mind being a loner. He passed away at an old age of 14 1/2 years!

Make sure that they are spade or neutered.

Check out the House Rabbit Society in your area.

Some Petco's sell rabbits... maybe some $40 range.

You will need to spend some time in a pen with a rabbit and see if there's a good connection between the two of you. They're social creatures and they enjoy being part of the family. They need time with you.

If you don't have the time to be with your rabbit, consider another pet.

I'm trying to pick a major in college. I want to work hands-on with animals, though.?

I'm considering pre-vet, then on to vet school. I'm also thinking of studying zoology, but I understand there aren't many hands-on jobs in that field. What sort of degree would I need to work with rescued animals, in a shelter or something like that? And how would I go about working with fish in, say, a wholesale place that supplies to pet stores and breeds fish? Any input will be helpful. Thanks!

Shelter work wouldn't require much of a degree, these folks typically follow orders of a vet or give basic care. I don't even think dog groomers have much training aside from on the job and that can be some pretty precision work.

You can look into animal EMT and expect that these are only going to be found in cities large enough to support the demand, that is, people willing to call an ambulance for their pets. I think the demand is there, you might look for geographic pockets where people are known for SHOWING or RACING animals because an emergency might be deemed that much more important than waiting for the vet to open, make a house call, or take them to a hospital themselves. Kentucky comes to mind with horses.

You could look into the law enforcement end of things and actually perform the rescue, or investigate cruelty cases. This probably requires some training as a law officer because some carry weapons, plus you have to know how to exercise the authority of apprehending an animal from a rowdy pet owner, as well as detective skills, interviewing, knowing your rights to search vs harrassment of the alleged abuser, etc.

You could go into law and prosecute abusers on a grand scale, such as puppy farmers, c o c k fighters (had to drag it out to escape censors!), exotic pet smugglers, and poachers. These situations sometimes look isolated enough but if you look into it, you are usually dealing with a pretty extensive network of people that are doing it...ie, organized crime.

You could study environmental sciences with emphasis on the habitat of the animals you are most interested. So if you dig dolphins, you would study marine biology and oceanography. If you like monkeys you might study forestry (emphasis on tropical forestry).

Unfortunately, in the helping professions, the further you move up the ladder, the further you get away from your population in need. I have a BA in social work. I have never advanced in any career because I didn't want to get away from that hands-on experience. The sad thing is...if you want the money, you have to move up. If you don't, well, you don't need the degree very often.

Um...I'm sorry but that cage is a total prison...the only rabbit that will be happy in there is a stuffed one. Your cage needs to be at least 4X2 feet for a single dwarf rabbit. And BTW, rabbits are social, they are best kept with other rabbits.

Define "nice" and easy to train and care for? All rabbits require the same care, and tbh they are quite a lot of work...rabbits are not what I'd call low maintenance...they require a lot of cleaning up after, a lot of researching into the best food, and a lot of handling to tame them. Not all rabbits enjoy being cuddled, this varies from rabbit to rabbit...some rabbits hate being picked up and never get over that fear. A rabbit being "nice" is really down to you...YOU are the one that will make it nice by taming and training it, and trust me its a lot of work.

The best place to get a rabbit is a rabbit rescue or from a reputable breeder. Pet shop rabbits are not normally as healthy and are never handled as much as private breeders and rescues do...this makes all the difference in training your rabbit.

Can I put pond weeds in my aquarium?

So, today I went to this little nursery and they had a bunch of ponds with pond lillies for sale. I have been to the big petstores around here looking for a floating plant because the fish I want to get for my aquarium like flaoting plants to shade them a bit from the lights. I couldnt find ANY flaoting aquarium plants at the pet stores, but at this nursery I found has this little pond "weed" thats has really really tiny dark red leaves, and it just floats on the water with really short roots. I asked the lady who worked there if it was for sale and she said I could have it for free because they wanted to get rid of it, so she gave me a huge bag of it. I was wondering if it would be ok to put some of it in the aquarium I have (its 10 gallons if that helps) or if it would kill the fish or something horrible would happen. (I'm thinking of getting rasboras and/or dwarf gouramis if this makes a difference)

The problem with putting something from outside ina tank is that you don't know exactly what you have or will bring in. You probably will have snails now. Or you could luck out and get away clean.

What's a good cage to house ONE ferret?

This weekend i'm purchasing a ferret from a local pet store.
They have a deal where when you purchase the ferret you get a "Super Pet My First Home" cage with it, as well as supplies..
This is the cage-

For one ferret that cage is a bit small. A cage of that size should generally only be used for travel or for quarantine (if you have multiple ferrets).

I would go with a larger ferret cage for a few reasons. First, they like to have room to move around. Enough room for them to have specifically separate "rooms". Not actual rooms, but enough room for a sleeping area, a litter box area and an eating area. And just so you know, I purchased this cage when I still only had one ferret.

For just one ferret you probably don't need as big a cage as that, but that brings us to my second reason why you should get a larger cage. Chances are, you will not always have JUST ONE FERRET.

We started out with one and we were happy. Then we got him a play mate. Then we rescued the third and fourth from less than ideal pet store conditions. The my boyfriend banned me from going into any more pet stores.

But my point is, plan for a possible future where you have 2 or more fuzz-butts. It will save you from buying a bunch of smaller, lesser-quality cages. Although, you should still have a smaller cage, like the one in your link, for travel or quarantine purposes.

If you only ever plan on having a single fuzzie, get model 141. If yours plans change you can always get the add-on unit. BUT, if you're unsure and think you might want to have more kids one day, I'd recommend getting model 142 because it's more cost effective.

Ideal Small Boa Constrictors for Pets

One highly popular and very common snake to keep as a pet nowadays would be the Hog Island boa constrictor, which can be found in Honduras’ Hog Islands. Such snakes happen to be hypo-melanotic, so their melanin body levels are lower than those of regular snakes and their colors aren’t as vivid as those of other boa constrictors. Their tail colors range from orange to pink, though, and they are able to shift their colors, depending on what time of the day it is. At night, their colors get lighter, with their neck and head turning practically white. Their overall body, in general, keeps its one-of-kind bluish tint.

Hog Island boa constrictors are highly popular with reptile collectors and lovers; however, populations of them in the wilderness have significantly dropped within recent years. Actually, Hog Island boa constrictors have not been spotted at the island for several years now and might be extinct; fortunately, some of them are still being bred in captivity. Even though several of them may still be running free in the wilderness, it would be of the utmost essence to take proper care of domestic ones that exist today. The specimens that hobbyists now keep may be the only remaining boa constrictors from Hog Island and in time, they could get reintroduced if success remains to be seen within their captive breeding.

Professionals also state that it would be vital for the species’ survival to keep the snake’s blood purity as it is. My son would like a sand boa as a pet and I am all for it. I had a pet corn snake as a child. But, my wife doesn't like snakes. Any advice.
I prefer answers from those who have owned a captive bred snakes.

A sand boa would be a easy beginner snake but they burrow most of the time- your son may get bored with it fairly quickly. Corn snakes are more fun to watch and handle, although they do get bigger. No matter which animal you choose, make sure you want it since you'll probably end up caring for it. I agree that there are many lizards that make great pets and are more entertaining for children (bearded dragon, anole, gecko). Plus you don't need to worry about feeding rodents (which may turn your wife off).

To get your wife on board: bring her to the next reptile show in your area and show her some babies- she'll think they're cute! Many people 'scared' of snakes just haven't been exposed to them. Knowledgeable breeders can answer all the questions she has, and she can help you decide which species would be best for your family.

Pets are a source of enjoyment and fulfillment for most people. Pets like dogs and cats serve as loyal companions to people and are rewarded with tender loving care by their owners. However, there are people who pour out their affection to exotic pets.

Exotic pets are named as such because they aren't domesticated and tamed and are most often found in the wild. However, the popularity of exotic animals as pets has encouraged pet stores to stock up on exotic pets to meet the rising demand in the market.

When a person hears exotic pet, the first thing that comes into his mind is an animal that is uncommon and maybe wild. There are quite harmless exotic pets like hamsters, mice, guinea pigs and rabbits. On the other hand, there are also exotic pets that may seem ferocious and wild at first glance.

desert horned lizards - advice needed?

Looking to get a "friendly" reptile as a pet.

......in most places they are illegal to keep if caught from the wild because they are mildly endangered/threatened.

Also, even expert keepers have difficulty keeping them alive in captivity because adults can consume close to a thousand ants a day. And they have to be a certain species of ant too.....I think it is usually harvester ants. They can be switched over to crickets or other invertebrates, but they require ants to be a substantial portion of their diet........ants are REALLLLLLY expensive to buy like you would with crickets or mealworms. And I know of only one retailer in the country that provides them, and they sell them for $6/1000 ......that's about $6 a day to feed plus the issuee of containing the ants within the enclosure.

A lot of places prey on newbie reptile keepers by stocking horned lizards in their inventory........only for the lizard to die by starvation a few weeks/months later.

I'm not really an expert on horned lizards and the only reason I know all this is because I found some when I was in Texas and was thinking of keeping them..........definately decided to release them after talking with the experts over at the www.kingsnake.com forums......if you're still not convinced, head on over into those forums and chat with the guys. Some of the guys(one in particular) might seem like a prick, but they are the experts on horned lizards and very passionate about preserving its species.
